Mammoth Cave

This post is dedicated to Teresa in San Francisco who is wondering why I haven’t written in a long time.

For spring break I went to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. It is the biggest cave in the world. It stretches 400 miles and is still growing. My family went there and we took a simple tour because we just came back from North Carolina (see post about Duke and UNC). One of the most interesting things about Mammoth Cave is that during the War of 1812 the British stopped ships from delivering gun powder to America so they had to make their own gun powder. The Americans mined salt peter in Mammoth Cave to make gun powder so they can use it to fight the war.

Another interesting fact is that someone found a dead body inside the cave. The interesting thing is that he still had his organs, muscles and even some berries left in his stomach. This is able to happen because the cave preserved his body because the temperature and climate stays the same 24/7. They named him Lost John.
